Windows Small Business Server 2003
Links and Information

After working for nearly a decade in an enterprise environment, managing 35+ servers with 1000+ clients running all versions of Windows as well as MacOS, Unix, and Linux, I moved into a consulting gig using Small Business Server. My initial configuration was based on my enterprise experience... and frankly, it was a mess. Since then, I've learned a great deal about how Small Business Server 2003 should be configured and managed and though I certainly don't know it all, I think I've gotten MUCH better.

To help you, in concert with Jeffrey Kane of TechSoEasy.com, who provided most of the initial links, I created this page to help guide you in your Small Business Server installation and management.

If you discover any links that no longer work or have questions and/or comments about this page, my site, or me, please contact me.

Before I list the links, here are some important points I have learned about SBS 2003 since I started supporting the system.

  1. USE THE WIZARDS. SBS Should NOT be managed the same way a person might manage a standard copy of Server. The wizards are designed to ensure SBS is configured properly in every aspect.
  2. DNS IS VITAL. For ANY Active Directory environment, not just SBS. Just because you can browse the internet, doesn't mean your DNS is correct. The SBS server must run your DNS and it must point only to itself for DNS in the network control panel. Further, all your workstations MUST point to the server for DNS and ONLY the server. If you don't do this, you could experience problems accessing resources on the server as well as experience LENGTHY delays in logging on to workstations.
  3. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE SBS SERVER. You CANNOT have another SBS server on the same network. The SBS server MUST be the FSMO Master Domain Controller. You CAN have other servers and other domain controllers - you just cannot have another SBS server.
